What to Expect as a Newcomer to AA in Amman

Coming to your first AA meeting in Amman can feel daunting, but you will be welcomed without judgment. Here is what typically happens:

  • Arrive a few minutes early — members will greet you and help you feel comfortable. You do not need to introduce yourself or say anything during the meeting.
  • Anonymity is respected — you are free to use only your first name. Nothing said in the room leaves the room.
  • You only need one thing — a desire to stop drinking. That is the only requirement for membership in AA.
  • No pressure to share — you can simply listen at your first (or any) meeting. Many newcomers attend several meetings before speaking.
  • The format — meetings typically open with readings from AA literature, followed by sharing from members about their experience with alcohol and recovery.
  • After the meeting — stay for tea or coffee. Members are happy to answer your questions and connect you with a sponsor if you wish.

About Alcoholics Anonymous in Amman

Amman is home to an active and growing AA fellowship. Alcoholics Anonymous arrived in Jordan decades ago and has helped hundreds of Jordanians and expatriates achieve sobriety. Our members come from all walks of life — Jordanians, Arab nationals, and international residents living in Amman.

Meetings in Amman are conducted in English and Arabic, depending on the meeting group. The AA program is built around the Twelve Steps — a spiritual (not religious) path of recovery that addresses the underlying causes of addiction. Members support one another through sponsorship, where a more experienced member guides a newcomer through the steps.

AA does not charge any fees and does not accept outside contributions. We are entirely self-supporting through voluntary donations from our own members. There is no waiting list, no intake form, and no need to make an appointment — you can walk into any open meeting.

If you cannot attend in person, online AA meetings are available as an alternative.
